Bus, plane or 2 days: the comparison

Option Duration Indicative price Our opinion
Day trip by road ≈ 18–20 h (10–12 h on the road) €70–130 Cheap but exhausting
Day trip by plane ≈ 15–16 h (2 × 1 h flight) €250–400 The best compromise
2 days by road or plane 2 days, 1 night in Cairo €180–450 Ideal: unhurried visits
Private transfer 5–6 h each way €180–300 per car For independent travellers

Cairo by plane: our recommendation

With a morning flight from Hurghada to Cairo, you are at the pyramids before the midday heat, you visit with an Egyptologist guide, then return to your hotel in the evening without spending the day on the road. It is more expensive, but you actually enjoy the visit.

What you see in one day

  • The pyramids of Giza: Khufu (Cheops), Khafre and Menkaure, plus the panoramic viewpoint over the plateau. Entry inside a pyramid requires an extra ticket.
  • The Sphinx and the valley temple next to it.
  • The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), next to the plateau, with the treasures of Tutankhamun — or, on some tours, the historic Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square.
  • Khan el-Khalili, the big bazaar of Islamic Cairo, if time allows.

Cairo by road: what to expect

Road tours leave Hurghada in the middle of the night (often 1–3 a.m.) to arrive in Cairo in the morning, follow the coast to the north and then cross the desert. You sleep (or try to) in the bus, visit for 6–7 hours, and are back late at night. It is doable for motivated adults on a budget, much harder with young children.

2 days in Cairo

A night in Cairo changes everything: pyramids and museum on day 1, Islamic Cairo, the Citadel and the bazaar on day 2, or the Saqqara and Dahshur pyramids, older and much quieter. Many tours combine Cairo and Luxor over 2–3 days.

Tips

  • Bring your passport (needed for domestic flights and checkpoints).
  • At the pyramids, decline politely offers of camel rides or « free » photos — agree any price first.
  • Check what is included: entrance fees, lunch, the museum (GEM or Tahrir).
  • Avoid summer midday at Giza: there is no shade on the plateau.
